Library overview

Use library items for content that recurs on several pages in a web site, or for content that changes frequently. Dreamweaver stores library items in a Library folder within each site root folder. You can define a different library for each site. (For more information about the site root folder, see Creating a local site.)

Placing a library item in a document inserts the contents of the file and creates a reference to the external file. The reference to the external library item file makes it possible to update the content on an entire site all at once by changing the library item. The global updating capability means that you must break the link to edit a library item in a document.

Library items that have been inserted in documents do not change automatically when the original library item changes. To update library items, use the commands in the Modify > Library submenu.

Create a library item from any portion of a document you want to reuse.
